Which Paint Finish Should You Choose?

When most people are getting their house painted, their mind instantly goes to choosing colors. Although color selection and harmony is an extremely important part of the painting process, Maverick Painting believes that choosing the proper finish to match each room can be equally as important. Take a look at our write up on the various paint finishes and choose the appropriate style for your home.

Matte/Flat Paint

As the simplest and least glossy of all finishes, flat paints are both porous and don’t reflect light well. Flat finishes are good for covering walls that are already painted because they have a consistent color profile which can also diminish surface imperfections. This finish does not do well with scrubbing or cleaning so it is usually used exclusively for ceilings, low traffic walls, and painting over blemishes.

Eggshell Paint

The Eggshell finish is the most widely used finish due to its slight amount of sheen and durable nature. Walls with Eggshell finishes tend to have a

great sense of depth and warmth. Amazingly this well-rounded finish is recommended for almost any room type and is very resilient to scrubbing making it a winner for high traffic areas or kid’s rooms.

Satin Paint

Satin is slightly more glossy than Eggshell but very similar in durability and look. Many paint companies offer Satin finishes that are virtually the same as an Eggshell finish. When in doubt on choosing a finish, Satin generally gets high marks for satisfaction in a wide variety of room types such as bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms.

Semi-Gloss

Most experts insist that Semi-Gloss is too glossy for total home applications and should be concentrated in rooms like kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and high traffic areas. Avoid Semi-gloss when dealing with surface imperfections because the nature of the finish will make these more noticeable.

Glossy

As the rarest used of all finishes, Glossy is extremely durable, stain resistant, and as the name indicates, glossy. There is no common use for Glossy finish but painters do use this finish for artistic embellishment on cabinets and trim.
