Jamie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?

I’ve been in the painting industry since I was 19, and I’m now 52. I painted homes to support my music dreams. I played in Rock bands at night in the clubs in Phoenix AZ. I did it so I could eat and afford band equipment at first but quickly learned I was good at the customer service aspect of the industry. So, I was quickly moved to a customer service painter. After several years of this, I moved to San Diego, CA in 2006.I came here with no job, but I knew I could get one within a short time. I walked across the street from where I was living by Tamarack Beach and had a job the first week making $15.00 an hour. After several different painting jobs I eventually landed a job at PEEK Brothers Painting.

I was a helper at first but within the first 30 days I found myself a foreman with a company van and my own helper making $19 an hour. I thought that was a lot of money in 2007. After a year or so I found out I was going to be a dad to a baby girl. Cheyenne Raine Waller was born November 19 2008. Everything was going good for the time being but then the recession hit and in January 2009 I was laid off from PEEK bros. They went from 15 employees down to 6 just two months after having a new baby in a new city. I was terrified!! How am I going to afford to live in Cardiff and support my baby daughter, without employment? Well, I decided it was no better time to try and start my own thing. I collected unemployment and started an online and in-person construction school so I could learn the law and business side. I had to prepare to get my license. At the same time, I came by the name Maverick Paint because my dad had owned a professional gun exhibition business called Maverick Guns. Then I bought the domain name maverickpaintingsandiego.com and began working with a media group out of Florida called Footbridge Media while studying for the exam. I had no idea if this was going to work out at all. My late Mother Nancy Waller bought me my first spray rig and I was finally ready and excited to get this company going. Then the time came to take the two exams and I aced both tests in the time allowed for just one test. I was over prepared but that whole process was a major risk and scary as hell. But if you believe in what you’re doing and aren’t afraid to fall. Now Maverick Paint is the premier upscale painting company. Now everything we do is a risk it seems. Let's pray for brighter futures and get out there and get things done to the best of our abilities. 2023 is going to be my comeback year and this article is all part of that process.

I live by the old saying ~ “everybody falls down but it’s how you get back up and dust yourself off and keep going that defines who you are” …

Jamie is the loving father of a beautiful 14 yr old girl Cheyenne Raine Waller.
